Stop Worrying!

“Mak[e] it normal” is the goal, IMO.

Ha ha, that being said I’ve only seen one other guy wearing a thong in the past three years, and that was at Herring Cove on Wednesday. There were more nude guys (6-8 near me) than guys in thongs (two).

Agree goal is making it normal for guys to wear a thong or even a g string if that’s their choice of swimwear. Think it’s going to be a slow process. That said, it’s true those of us who choose to wear them now should do it and do it without worrying. Yes there’ll be the sideways glances, sniggers, furtive pics & negative comments from time to time (and I’ve certainly had my fair share of each of those) but ultimately it passes, people have low boredom thresholds, and we are mostly able to just carry on thonging from what I read on this forum!!

@aquamantriton … on the positive side, men in thongs and thongs in general are way more accepted than they were 10 years ago. I don’t remember the last time I got a snicker or a sideways glance or the last time I went to any beach and didn’t see a thong or at least very cheeky suit on someone.

… that is positive. Where I am, it’s gone the other way. Used to see some but it dwindled to one or two this last season :frowning: Still, speedos have made a come back from nothing so hoping in the upcoming season more cheeky cuts & thongs will re-appear as they have where you are

Must be a Florida vibe to be accepted more in thongs guys/ladies. I been trying out different beaches and I had no comments, I catch people glancing or occasional I look back to see they took a pic of my backside. Regardless of where you are, take the chance and wear the thong. You’ll feel so great. I still get a little nervous when I walk by folks in normal suits but I also go for it too. I walked by two young men and a lady. I said good morning to them and they asked me how things are going, a quick exchange, I kept walking, nothing said about the thong, acted normal.

Well I appreciate the sentiment, I don’t find the thong to be inherently feminine, nor do I feel feminine wearing it. I know that since the 1980s it has been marketed as a feminine garment as it is a great way to sell with sex appeal and hip hop culture became mainstream where thongs are a staple in female clubwear.

However this is a fairly new cultural perspective and I’d imagine more men would wear them if they were seen as they are, a practical, comfortable, and protective garment. Once the utility of the thong is realized by the wearer, it makes it much easier to stop worrying about wearing one as it isn’t being worn to express something.

In UK, and I imagine USA, you need to be careful when there are kids around but otherwise I wear what I like and have often worn a g-string, which is very comfortable.

Thats exactly what I saw on the weekend. I saw a man who wasn’t me in a thong at a fairly busy public beach. It was great being able to look around and see no one even notice or care about this guy in a thong. He was with his girlfriend who actually was wearing a really conservative square cut bottom. But there were plenty of women in thongs and almost thong bottoms. Either way It was great to see another man in a thong and no one be bothered by it.

If you are going to a tropical Island then by all means PLEASE wear a thong… anything more feels like a wasted experience.

When I start traveling again, I’m definitely going to wear a thong at different beaches.

I had my first day of hitting the local beach this year. It was finally warm enough to enjoy the day. I had a female friend text me telling me to meet her. I got to the beach just as she was setting up. I joined her and stripped down to my thong for the day. In short order a young couple sets up near by. She is wearing a black with white polka dots very cheeky bikini. He is wearing short swim trunks. I say hello and we exchange a couple of niceties. After a while they start splashing around in the ice cold weather. He jumps in and I make a joking comment about him being a better man than I or just crazier than I am. His partner laughs and says he is just crazy. After they are done splashing around they ask me if I would be willing to take their photograph. I say sure and they tell me they want the photo with a background a little way down the beach. No problem, I say. We all walk down the sand. I snap. Couple photos of them with his phone. We stand around and talk for a bit. All the while I’m wearing one of my smaller thongs. There is not one bit of discomfort form anyone with what I was wearing. In all it was a very pleasant conversation.

This goes to the thing I keep saying. Be friendly, smile, be respectful and be playful. People will respond to your joy more than anything else.

@RapidBlue that is such a cool story man! You may have inspired that guy. Was your lady friend thonging?

This day my friend was wearing a very cheeky cut bikini. That’s mostly what she wears. It might as well be a thong the way she wears it.

The other day I was walking down the beach and I saw a family of four, mom, dad, 2 kids taking photos. The couldn’t get all four of them except a selfie. I waved, smiled, and got the attention of the dad. At the same time I offered to take their picture and dad asked if I could. So I took a bunch of landscape and portrait pictures. I handed the phone back, they all thanked me and have a great day. Not a thing was said about the thong. I continued with my walk. Later when I walked by them the kids and mom waved while dad was fishing in the surf. I was wearing my Dark Blue Bang Miami Swim Thong. Not a thing was mentioned about my suit. Dad asked how much I squat since I have big legs. The family was wearing normal swim suit but they obviously were not put off by a man in a thong. Remember, it’s all in your head, trust me I still think about it but that’s what makes it fun.

Today was my first day at my local beach just north of Boston, and I had to go solo because my GF had some errands. The beach was already crowded so I couldn’t pick an inconspicuous spot. Three young women 15’ to the left, two more 20’ to the right, a couple to the left, a couple to the right, a mom and dad and toddler right in front of me. And – gulp – 5-6 teenage boys just in front of them. Except for the mom, all the women were in thongs. Fortunately I had my pup with me to provide moral support.

This is a setup where I have to remind myself to stop worrying, even though I’m no longer new to this.

The dad and I were chatting about his old-school 16mm film camera, so all good there. One of the couples came up to play with my pup. But passing the group of teenage boys to get to the ocean… that’s nerve-wracking for me. I’m 99% sure they were a bit taken aback, but by the time I walked back that had all passed. Chatted with a woman while standing in the 50F water with the pup, and no side-eye spotted.

Stop worrying. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I got out to my local spot on the sand today. I set up between two groups of young women and got a small smile from them once I was only wearing my thong. At the beginning of the day the sand was pretty empty and everyone was spread out. I’m lying on my stomach, buns to the sun reading a book and notice three young women walking down the sidewalk looking for a place to be. They are about to walk on until they see me and stop. They set up near by and reveal their thong bikinis. Then another group of women do the same, stop and set up near by, two of them in very cheeky bikinis. A little bit later I see the same thing, five women about to walk on past me. Two of the women stop the others nd direct them to a spot on the sand near by. The two strip down to thong bikinis the other three are wearing cheeky bikinis. In the end I had about ten women make a decision to set up near by. I have to think it was because they saw me in a thong and felt it was safe for them too.

I had mothers walking their young children walking the waterline near me. I had a couple teen age boys near by. No one said anything or made any type of gesture that was negative. It was a good day.

No need to worry, just enjoy the day.

Sounds like a great day. Thanks for sharing.

First day of the season at East Beach, southern RI along Block Island Sound. About a mile down the 4x4 trail it was an absolutely deserted beach. Throughout the course of the day there were few walkers and a few blankets eventually set up about 50 yards apart. Although a few girls in very cheeky bikinis did pass by, the distances involved were too far to see what anybody was or was not wearing. It was a perfect day, weather-wise. I wore a miniscule g-string to and from the parking area and all day on the beach with no problem at all. Although had I worn nothing that also would have been plenty.

This is the one between Watch Hill and Misquamicut? Or the one of the same name near Ninigret Pond? I really need to get there sometime.

How are the water temps there? Would it be easy (or hard) to get a surf SUP there?

It’s East Beach in Charlestown, not the one in Westerly. If you want to SUP in the ocean it’s about 150 yards from the parking lot to the water assuming the lifeguards let you launch in the swimming area, perhaps 200 if not. I’ve never seen anyone SUPing in the ocean (in that area). If you prefer calm water Ninigret Pond is directly adjacent to the parking lot - the walk would be about 15-20 yards if that. I have seen SUPers on Ninigret Pond and have personally kayaked there. At the moment the water in Block Island sound is about 50 degrees, it should be about 70 in August.
