I’m not asking what everyone’s orientation is by any stretch. I find that reading through posts, most male thongers are straight. Ive thonged around gay guy friends and I find that often times I’m the only thonger and the only straight guy. I do find it more comfortable though thonging around women in the masses or when I’m out with my gf we tend to set up by females. Ive had it where females tend to set up by us…. But yeah I listened to the underwear podcast and those guys recognized that straight guys don’t tend to have a brief or speedo phase….we go straight for the thong from shorts. I wonder why that is?
I’m bisexual! Just love my thongs!
Straight women wear them so why can’t straight men.
I’m straight and married and my wife fully supports. I wore swim briefs all the time growing up on swim team, but wearing them on the beach feels weird which is why I prefer thongs.
I’ve noticed this for a very long time. There is an element of projection that gay men don’t have. They seem to be very content with speedos. Here I’m postulating that it is a form of beachwear that we’ve admired, usually in women, and we’d like to normalize; and if it becomes normalized in men then it will be even more normalized in women.
Last week a saw two women, plus sized, both very comfortable in thongs, and I thought, that’s so cool! I also mused what they would look like with regular bottoms and my assessment was that standard bottoms would only make them look bigger. They both gave me “thongs” up (thumbs up) another quality more common with people who wear thongs: more relaxed, more chilled. I might be more of an outlier as I am equally comfortable in tiny, transparent g-strings, boy shorts, speedos, and board shorts. I prefer a more overall tan but I am interested in representing and normalizing thongs in both males and females so I will wear thongs a lot more often than other types of beach wear. I do not find males sexually or romantically attractive, I am married and have two kids.
I am straight, and I started wearing thongs because of women. I was a big WWE fan as a kid, and I first discovered thongs after seeing Trish Stratus in one. She looked so hot in a thong that I had to try it out myself. Since then, I have only been attracted to women who wear thongs.
I have had a few compliments from men, but it would mean the world to me if a woman said something positive about my thong wearing. I do think that women have silently supported me at the beach and in public. Once, I was at the beach tanning in a thong when this woman asked me to watch her things while she went to the washroom. Even though there were many guys lurking around her, she clearly felt that I was the safest option.
Responding to the OP - I find that the societal opinion would lean towards believing men who thong are gay while I have found over the years and decades that more male thongers are straight/bi vs gay. I have both gay and straight guy friends that thong but most of the gay men I have been friends or acquainted with over the years have not been fans of thongs. Speedo cuts and short shorts being more popular, followed by nude.
I identify as straight and have worn thong underwear and swimwear for 25 years. Both as a single man and with every women I have been with including my wife and ex-wife. My wife is supportive. I wear thong swimwear at the beach and our neighborhood pool. I have been to gay pool parties and was the only guy thonger, more than once.
Over the past several years, I believe Gen Z and even Millennials are less concerned or opinionated on men in skimpy suits at the beach compared to my Gen X/Boomer folks, just as they themselves have brought back the thong for women in mass.
At my age, experience and confidence, I truly do not care if a stranger thinks I am gay for wearing a thong. My only concern is to hope they think I am fit and look good for my age as well as I knowing I am a safe man to be around. That is often why I think women will thong closer to me on the beach than men in board shorts, throwing a football and seeking attention in a different way than myself.
Cheers.
That’s funny man because there have been quite the number of thong slips on male professional wrestlers.
I feel like I didn’t answer the OP’s question, so here is my take.
As a 90s kid, I remember how movies and shows in that era almost exclusively portrayed gay men as effeminate. Since many people are used to seeing thongs only on women, a male thonger can often be unfairly labeled as a crossdresser or as being effeminate.
We know that not all gay men are effeminate, but the general public still holds that bias. Maybe that’s why gay men are trying to distance themselves from femininity by choosing to wear jockstraps and briefs which are considered more masculine.
As for straight male thongers, they are often intrigued by the aesthetics of thongs on women. Since thongs are visually appealing and men have buttocks too, they might think, “why not?”
I agree on that comment and could have added the same on my response - that I got into thongs because I enjoy seeing a women’s butt in a thong.
I seem to be the minority in this conversation. This is what I have witnessed in person over the past 30 years as an thonger. What I have experienced at beaches/pools, on various message boards and chats is very different from the “most guys are straight” sediment. I would roughly say 60-70% of the people that I have encountered are gay, bisexual, or “bi-curious”.
Perhaps the correlation is highly related to beach location as in a known gay beach with thongers will be predominantly gay people whereas all other beaches male thongers statistically would be straight.
Maybe it has to do with the location as opposed to the cut of the suit.
Either way I hope thonging catches fire for all men in all places regardless of orientation.
This is my armchair speculation, but if we’re talking raw numbers, then I do think most men wearing thongs are straight just because there are way more straight men than gay men. If we’re talking percentages, then I do think a higher percentage of gay men wear thongs than straight men because we gay guys love our skimpy swimsuits.
I can only speak for myself, a straight male. When looking for a beach where I’ll be comfortable wearing a thong, I often search for “gay beaches”. I find it less likely to encounter families and prudes. There may be some other men in thongs, but it seems square cuts and bikinis are more the norm. As to why I am wearing a thong, I enjoy the sensuality and pleasure of being nearly naked at the beach. On some occasions I have been approached by other men and as long as they are respectful and not creepy, I take it as a compliment.
Well said, TxMicro. My feelings and sentiments exactly.
While I have certainly worn a thong at progressive/gay friendly beaches, I have also done so at many regular beaches.
When doing so, I try and lay out near other similarly minded people (thongs, revealing bikinis, etc). However, on numerous occasions I’ve had families set-up right next to me.
As Dan mentioned above, my wife also fully supports my thong wearing. And like Quest stated, getting the occasional compliment does wonders for your self confidence! So at the end of the day, if wearing a thong makes you feel good/sexy/confident, etc. go out and do it.
I suspect that most male thong wearers are straight or bi. I say this because in my observations of gay areas of beaches, etc, they are wearing speedos or squarecuts. Whatever your orientation, wear what you are most comfortable in and don’t let others influence you in any way.
The question about whether seeing women looking great wearing thongs has led me to thongs is something I have struggled with, as in: Why did seeing women wearing thongs get me into them? I still don’t have a clear answer in my head, so I’m interested in other’s thoughts on this. I think for me it’s some mix of: if they can I can, that I like wearing less, that I enjoy the tan. Maybe I’ve overlooked something?
Straight here. My first encounter with thongs was way back in the 90’s at Clearwater Beach where M/F couples were rocking the thongs. South Beach, Miami is an assortment too. I get the you must be gay stigma because you wear thongs but in my experience I’ve seen all types wearing thongs.
The funny thing I notice is women are more into cheeky, cheeky-thong, rio, or a small bottom. I wear a modest thong that looks like a speedo from the front and thong back. I rarely see a true thong on women these days but love looking anyways. Just love people watching and seeing those thong bikinis on the ladies. The other day at the beach a lady was in one-piece-thong, she looked great. Rarely see a one-piece-thong.
I’m straight and agree I pretty much went straight to tanning and swimming in thongs. I do have some swim briefs which I use at the public pool for swimming laps.
I’m straight and while some have assumed I’m gay, what I’ve seen, gay culture sticks to “speedos” more. I haven’t met that many thongers in the wild though. My guess would be like the rest of the thread, that it is mostly straight simply based on population numbers but anyone is welcome to wear.
Culturally (in the USA) there is more a stigma around the male body in general. Many are openly disgusted with it as opposed to being indifferent if not attracted. Ill see guys performatively disgusted so as to not appear “gay”.
In in reality you don’t have to be disgusted to not be attracted. My guess is that it stems from 90’s trends. In hood culture where appearing “gay” would make you a target in prison, and the whole Christian megachurch culture pushed modesty on men and also the fear of being “gay” and getting aids. Couple that with the overexposure of women wearing bikinis and thongs in popular culture/media/marketing and the culture has conflated two unrelated things.
It looks more people are open to both gays and the male body now and more likely to accept that you cant judge the man by his swimwear.
