I recently went on a cruise and exclusively wore my Desmiit thongs. Most of that time was in the hot tubs. After 2 visits a day for 13 days, the light blue is now almost white. I know chlorine is tough on suits. Add the hot water, and it’s brutal. So, this brings me to my question.
What brand(s) do you recommend that will (should) hold up to being worn in hot tubs?
I would think most would hold up to the chlorine, but I’d have switched it up. That being said being said, I just got a thong from PetitQ I’m eager to wear at a pool or similar hot tub event. Will keep you all posted.
I regularly wear my Grand Axis thong in the hot tub and haven’t seen any color issues. I do usually wash them sometime the same week after hot tub use. I don’t know if that has any effect, but I love the Grand Axis swim thongs.
Polyester and PBT fabrics, like the TYR Durafast Elite® and Speedo Endurance fabrics, are the most durable, however, I don’t often see them used by thong swimwear brands. They’re not as soft, stretchy, and comfortable as the more common nylon and spandex blends.
Spandex deteriorates when exposed to chlorine. Some spandex, like LYCRA® XTRA LIFE™, has been treated to resist damage. They advertise 5-10 times the durability compared to ordinary spandex fabrics.
There are a few things you can do to extend the life of any swimsuit.
Handle carefully when putting the swimsuit on or taking it off
I usually wear Todd Sanfield’s “Shore Thong” or Charlie by MZ’s “Swim Thong” in the coed hot tub, sauna, and steam room at the gym. They’re more expensive than many other brands, but have held their shape and the colors haven’t faded.
@sam, I regularly do all of the things you mentioned for my daily lap swim suits, and it definitely works. I have 2 suits that I switch between every other day, so they fully dry between uses. I also have some of the polyester/PBT suits that are bikini style water polo suits. Like others have mentioned, I also don’t know who makes any thongs in those materials.
I knew my Desmiit suits weren’t polyester and that the ship hot tubs most likely had higher than normal amounts of chlorine in them. That is why I kept to just one suit. I had a second suit with me, but was so surprised how quickly the suit was damaged I decided why trash 2 suits. Since the experience wearing a thong on the cruise was overall a positive one, I will definitely wear a thong on my next cruise. I just hope to find a suit that will last for more than a few hot tub visits.
I have noticed that the Desmiits discolor more easily and quickly than other brands, probably because of their material choices and price point. My other thongs from Charlie and Muscleskins hold up. I do recommend rinsing them after use, however, at the very least.
