Polyester and PBT fabrics, like the TYR Durafast Elite® and Speedo Endurance fabrics, are the most durable, however, I don’t often see them used by thong swimwear brands. They’re not as soft, stretchy, and comfortable as the more common nylon and spandex blends.
Spandex deteriorates when exposed to chlorine. Some spandex, like LYCRA® XTRA LIFE™, has been treated to resist damage. They advertise 5-10 times the durability compared to ordinary spandex fabrics.
There are a few things you can do to extend the life of any swimsuit.
- Handle carefully when putting the swimsuit on or taking it off
- Thoroughly rinse with cold water after use
- Dry in the shade after rinsing
- Occasionally hand wash with mild detergent
I usually wear Todd Sanfield’s “Shore Thong” or Charlie by MZ’s “Swim Thong” in the coed hot tub, sauna, and steam room at the gym. They’re more expensive than many other brands, but have held their shape and the colors haven’t faded.
