Fuss Over Thong Stretches Throughout Lehigh Valley

It is less than an eighth of a yard of material, but the thong bathing suit has become a cause celebre.

Sandra Vulcano said she thinks such skimpy use of material in bathing suits should be banned from public pools and parks.

But Sherry Parsons likes the comfort of the suit, which consists of about a 5-inch triangle of material in front and a T-string in back.

In the past week, the two South Side Easton women have stirred up a controversy that has reached from one end of the Lehigh Valley to the other.

Parsons, 25, wore a thong to sunbathe and swim at Heil Pool on Easton’s South Side, and Vulcano, who was at the pool with her 12-year-old daughter, said she was shocked. She complained to city officials and started to get signatures on petitions against such suits.

But Easton officials said none of its laws covers the issue.

In other words, wearing a thong or a string bathing suit is legal in Easton.

But after City Council was presented Wednesday with petitions signed by 40 residents, asking that such suits be banned, the elected officials promised they would have an answer by their July 22 meeting.

And the incident has raised questions about such attire in other municipalities.
