I'm 69. Can I Wear a Thong to the Beach?

Dear Reverend,

I love going to the beach. I’m 69 years old, and I would like to wear a thong. I don’t want to scare anyone off, but I feel like what I wear for swimming is my business. Do you think I’m too old?

Seymour Butz (male, 69)

Dear Seymour,

Honeybuns, if you’re comfortable wearing a thong in public, I say go for it. Last time I checked, there were no age restrictions on bathing attire. Heck, in Vermont, it’s legal to leave your house naked if you like, so I see no problem with showing a little cheek on the beach. So what if those cheeks have a few wrinkles?

In this age of body positivity, a wider range of shapes, colors, ages and sizes is being represented in film, television, ads and social media. The initial push for showing more diversity was geared toward women, but the powers that be have finally realized that men also suffer from body image issues, and more guys are getting in on the act. Hopefully, more visibility of real human bodies will have a positive effect on the general public’s attitude about beauty.

The fact that you’ve made it to 69 is cause for celebration. You’re not dead, and life’s too damn short to worry about what other people think. So, get out there and sun those buns! But, please, don’t forget to slather them with sunscreen first. If anybody gives you grief about your outfit, tell them to go pound sand.

Good luck and God bless,

The Reverend

Reverend’s note: If you haven’t heard of half thongs for men, do yourself a favor and give that a google. You’ll thank me.

Go for it …I’m only couple of years younger & wear a thong or g string to public beaches. I try to keep away from areas with families with young kids but there’s plenty of beach & no reason why everyone can’t co-exist wearing the swimwear they like (male or female)!

Couldn’t agree more, @aquamantriton.

I’m just a few years shy of you but I also wear thongs/g-strings to the beach. I tend to stay away from the family and kids not that I worry about them seeing me it’s just I like the peace and quite. I go to the beach to hear the ocean not screaming kids.

I say yes please do. I’m 67, in good shape, and a thong is the only thing I wear on the beach. Usually I’m with my wife which gives me a bit more confidence. I/we just go about our normal business and make sure we do nothing to attract any unwelcome attention. Go for it, you’ll be pleased you did. Perhaps let us know how you get on?

Hey man, do it. I was 50 the first time I wore a thong to the beach, 51 now. It’s a great feeling being free.

I wore a thongs and g-strings for the first time at 59. Prior to that, it was swim briefs. In 2021, I spent two weeks on all the beaches in Volusia County, Florida (Daytona Beach and all beaches north and south in the county). I wore thongs and g-strings every single day and it was the best vacation of my life.

My swimwear of choice is listed below, from the most coverage to the least. I have different suits based on the venue and what is permitted or what is socially accepted without being ostracized. An example for me is I would not wear swim briefs to the local pool that is only 100 yards from my house. I live in a very conservative town, and it would be very frowned upon. It’s just not worth the potential ramifications. So there I wear the swim trunks. Even after wearing the swim trunks, I heard comments after the fact. I don’t care because what I feel is conservative is “risqué” in other people’s eyes. However, I live near two state parks that have swimming facilities. At these locations I have no problem wearing the swim briefs. I have even wore rio cut swim briefs from Cocksox (now discontinued) to these parks, even though the PA DCNR rules state the buttocks must be fully covered.

After that trip to Florida, I have been eagerly searching for beaches, pools, resorts, etc. where I can where g-strings and thongs with zero repercussions.

Just go for it. The worst thing that will happen is someone will make a comment or someone in authority will ask you to cover up. Just be prepared to defend your right to wear what is permitted. It also helps to know what is permitted beforehand so you can politely explain to the haters you are doing nothing wrong.

It’s pretty sad that we even have to discuss this. I’ve always felt that if you’re comfortable wearing something, do it. I’m a few months shy of 69, and I definitely don’t plan on wearing anything but a thong or g-string. So, my friend, keep on wearing your thong.

Things don’t have an age limit or expiration date. If anything, I think that we grow more comfortable in our own skin and less inhibited as we age, which means you should be even more likely to wear a thong at 69 if you want. Life is short, so do what makes you happy.
