The veil of morality has descended on the beach in Round Lake Beach.
Henceforth, a new ordinance says, beachgoers must cover up areas that most folks consider private.
Two years ago, the village gained national attention when some 1,200 of its 16,000 citizens signed a petition asking the village to ban thong bikinis-a thin excuse for the lower part of swimwear.
At that time, the northwest Lake County town shied away from taking action, fearing such a ban would leave it exposed to legal challenges from thong defenders.
But on Tuesday night, a newly elected Village Board unanimously passed an ordinance that may send beach-bound residents grabbing their dictionaries instead of their favorite best-seller before hitting the sand. Banned are such areas as the natal cleft, perineum and the pubic symphysis.
“There are dictionaries available if anyone has any doubt,” said Donald Morrison, the village attorney who crafted the law. “We wanted to be very specific so it could pass constitutional muster.”
