Park board staff recommends permanent 'swim attire' policy at Vancouver pools

Vancouver park commissioners will be asked Monday night to adopt a permanent policy that defines what type of swim attire is allowed at the city’s pools.

The recommendation comes more than a year after commissioners voted 6-1 to run a trial that allowed various types of swimwear to be worn by patrons when swimming.

Baring genitals, however, is not allowed.

Staff’s report said appropriate swimwear is defined as what other Canadians find as “an acceptable level of tolerance in a family public swimming environment that includes maintaining full and appropriate coverage of genitals.”

Or as Peter Fox, the park board’s manager of recreation services, told commissioners at the meeting in April 2023 to launch the trial:

“The policy speaks to full coverage of the genital area. We do have patrons that do wear string bikinis, thong bottoms and so on with the cheeks of the buttocks exposed. That’s not a problem, as long as the genital area is covered.”

A section of this article states the following:

“Appropriate swimwear allows the body to move freely, does not impede buoyancy and does not create an increased risk to the safety of the bather or lifeguard,” the report said.

“Attire for swimming must be clean, must not restrict movement or create a safety hazard, and cannot be clothing worn from the street or workout into the pool.”

This is exactly why thongs and g-strings should be allowed everywhere. I feel all beaches, public pools, hotels, etc. everywhere should allow the wearing of thongs and g-strings. This is because the buttocks are NOT a sexual organ. I agree 100% the genitals should be covered. Now as far as the topfree movement, I am in favor. But I can see why some countries/cultures would be in favor and some would not.

I don’t know about the rest of Canada, but Edmonton has a similar policy.

Suitable swimwear is required. Swimwear may be made of different types of fabrics and styles as long as it does not interfere with safety or water quality. All swimwear must be clean and brought to the facility for the purpose of swimming.

Toronto is pretty much the same. There’s no problem swimming in thongs and g-strings. I swim laps regularly in my Muscleskins thong and usually wear my g-strings at the outdoor pools in the summer.

I can confirm that thong swimsuits are permitted at the public pools in Vancouver. For several years I have worn thongs for lap swimming, in hot tubs, and saunas at Vancouver pools..

That’s good to know. I will be visiting Vancouver in August, and I am thinking of having a few swim sessions at Kitsilano Pool. I will definitely have my swim thongs ready.

Buttocks are a part of the leg. Over the decades knees, thighs, and buttocks have all been targets of the moral police because of their proximity to the genitalia. I don’t know what’s up with breasts, but that’s another topic.

Personally I have always rejected the farmer’s tan, or board short tan. A golden tan on chest and arms and lower legs and a pasty acrid off white tan between bellybutton and knees? Not esthetically pleasing. Even a Speedo tan leaves buttocks under colored; interestingly a thong tan line IS esthetically pleasing!

Were progressively moving to a “I don’t care” attitude from wearers and non-wearers, leaving people to tan as they wish with fewer and fewer Karens to raise a fuzz.
