Sandy Point State Park, Maryland

I recently spent some time at Sandy Point State Park, MD (official website) in Annapolis, Maryland. Sandy Point has a one-mile-long sandy beach with beautiful views of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Reservations are required on summer weekends and holidays, and the fee is $5 per person as of 2026. Parking lots fill up early on peak summer days.

There are two main areas where thong wearers tend to settle. East Beach is probably the better-known spot, though I did not check it out that day because a group had reserved the East Beach parking lot. South Beach is the main beach and gets very crowded. The farther you walk toward the bridge, the more room there is to spread out, so that is where I set up my umbrella and beach blanket.

It turned out to be a lovely day of undisturbed tranquility. A few couples settled near me after I was already there, and both women were wearing true thongs. It seemed like we all had the same idea: put some distance between ourselves and the crowds and enjoy the beach somewhere that felt more relaxed.

Sandy Point is very much a family environment. Many families had tents, picnic tables, and cookouts near the pavilions and grassy areas. Walking to and from the parking lot without a cover-up was not something I felt the need to do. Thongs and family beaches are perfectly compatible, but there was no reason to push anything on an otherwise perfect day.

Overall, Sandy Point was a very positive experience. Crowded near the main areas, but peaceful once you walk toward the bridge. I felt comfortable, unbothered, and glad to be there. I will be back.

I’ve lost count how many times I’ve been to Sandy Point. I avoid east beach as I don’t enjoy a few of the regulars who thong there that don’t seem to have boundaries. I usually settle at the south end of South Beach. I do appreciate its location to my home and its a nice day option instead of going all the way to Rehoboth or the like.
