Thonging in Italy

I’m planning a trip to northern Italy in Early September 2026. Thinking about spending some time around Lake Como and/or the Amalfi Coast. Would love any advice about those, or any other places where you have thonged in Italy

I haven’t had problems in coastal France, Spain, Portugal, Italy/Sicily/Sardinia, or Croatia. Many women wear thongs in all these places, so you can go with the flow. That being said, you see a lot more guys in board shorts now than a decade ago, so you might get a sideways glance.

I haven’t been to Como is ages, can’t speak to that.

Thonged in Venice at hotel, Lido beach and Lido beach club. No issues at beach or beach club. No issues at hotel other than disbelieving looks of some tourists (although got occasional compliment from tourist too unbelievably)

Had no problems thonging anywhere in Europe most recently Sweden, Finland and before in France, Germany even England

Agree with the earlier comment on the sadly increasing prevalence of board shorts in Europe

My lone trip to Italy was a 16 day tour with my mom three years ago. I wore a Speedo Solar with 2” sides everywhere, and I was the guy in the skimpiest suit at every stop. Alas, no male thongers. However, I did see other guys in swim briefs at every location, even if they still weren’t the majority. I don’t think you’d have a problem thonging. I just wasn’t comfortable doing so.

I spent 4 days in Sorrento. The hotel didnt have a beach but more of a dock extending out into the sea which lounge chairs.

I wore thongs each day. We would spend anywhere from 1 to 4 hours just relaxing, reading, and swimming. A few stares, one surprised younger woman who giggled a bit but no issues.

i was the only guy in a thong.
