Why Do We Legislate Modesty On Beaches? Those Thong Things

Good news on the swimsuit front is as rare as a flattering style, but here is the genuine article: southwest suburban Lemont has joined Round Lake Beach in banning the buttocks-baring thong swimsuit.

The Lemont Village Board has revised its public decency ordinance to specify the parts of the human body that may not be displayed in public. Buttocks are on the list.

The northwest Lake County town of Round Lake Beach banned the thong in June. The thong is also swimsuit non grata in Florida, where it is banned on state beaches, and in Palm Springs, Calif.

The thong, which has been nicknamed the “dental floss” suit, features a band of material worn in what appears to be an extremely uncomfortable position down the center of one’s rear.

The appearance this summer of several thonged persons at the Lemont Park District pool aroused the ire of patrons who felt that bare buttocks were unsuitable viewing for children and teenagers.

As much as one applauds the concern shown for the sensitivities of our young people, one cannot help but wonder: Could this be a case of doing the right thing for the wrong reason?
